What Do We Do?

Arizona Education Association Retired was founded in 1988. Dennis Van Roekel was the President of AEA.

While our goals remain protecting your future by serving on ASRS committees, monitoring the Arizona State Retirement System; monitoring and advocating for you at the state legislature; and helping to fulfill the goals of AEA, we want to provide an organization in which each of our members feels at home and can grow, learn and add to your retirement life through your affiliation with your professional organization.

We offer members opportunities to socialize, meet guest speakers, and help with special projects through our local AEA-Retired chapters located throughout the state.

Intergenerational Mentoring Project: AEA-Students, AEA, andAEA-Retired, in conjunction offer a mentoring program to education students in their 3rd, 4th years of college and their 1st through 3rd year of teaching.

Our Presentations Committee is visible around the state at our local chapters, at public school sites and in community forums offering discussions, information and awareness programs.

We offer leadership to our coalition organizations, the Arizona Alliance for Retired Americans and Coalition of Retired Educators. As an AEA-Retired member you are a member of both of those organizations, and your skills and volunteerism are welcomed there, too.

AEA-Retired members serve on all of the AEA Committees that meet during the year.

Read Across America - We help classrooms to celebrate NEA Read Across America in March. Click here to see President Obama's Read Across America Proclamation.

We have other places where the skills of our members make valuable contributions: researchers for our communications in print and on the web, technology talents for internet endeavors, grassroots organizers and volunteers for political advocacy, and leaders of local chapters. Please contact Linda Somo if you would like to join any of the above committees or would like more information.

We raise funds for the AEA Foundation Fund which go toward our intergenerational mentoring program called AZ I.M.P.A.C.T. (Intergenerational Mentoring Program Attracting & Connecting Teachers). This is a collaboration between AEA-Retired, AEA, AEA-Student Program to help education students in their 3rd year of college through their 3rd year of teaching. These funds are tax deductible, and we are always looking for donations! Click here to support an IMPACT team of student and AEA-Retired. $25.00. AEA-Retired is always looking for your input regarding improvements to our organization. Please let us know if there is a place we can do better, or an addition to our organization that you'd like to be a part of. We are an all-volunteer organization, which means that your input is valued, and the time you give us is what makes our "engine" run.
